For those of you who weren't able to attend last month's Coffee with the Principal, one of the topics was supporting students academic achievement in math through building math fluency. In the way that families support, teach, and reinforce sight words for young reading students, math fluency can be strengthened as well. Having basic facts readily recalled will allow students to focus more brain power towards the concepts in math problems. All grade level teaching teams will be holding (or have already held--kudos to 1st grade Teachers!) a workshop for parents to provide examples of games/activities that will reinforce the math fluency skills. Here is a list of the math fluency skills by grade levels.

Math Fluencies

Grade Level

Required Fluencies

Kindergarten

Add/subtract within 5

Good afternoon El Oro Way Charter for Enriched Studies, The safety and welfare of our students and staff are our highest priorities. To provide schools an opportunity to practice emergency response procedures, the Superintendent of Schools has asked all students and staff to participate in a District-wide emergency preparedness drill on Thursday October 19, 2017. El Oro Way will conduct the drill at 10:30am. Parents and guardians are reminded to apply sunscreen on children before drop off since the student body will be assembled on the playground field for approximately one hour. The school office will be closed for the duration of the drill. Please be advised that students will be dismissed at the regular time on this day. The goals of the training drill are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries. As part of the drill, the students and staff will participate in the activation of our school’s Safe School Plan. Please make sure that all contact information for your child is current at school, so that in the event of an actual emergency, we can reach you. Prior to the drill, please discuss with your child your family’s home emergency preparedness plan. Several resources are available to help you prepare. The American Red Cross has outstanding materials. You can obtain Red Cross from their website: http://www.redcross.org or by calling the Los Angeles Chapter. Thank you and have a great evening.

Good afternoon, El Oro Way Charter for Enriched Studies learning community. This is Principal Choi with an update on morning drop off. First of all, thank you to all the parent volunteers who facilitate the morning drop off valet program.  Your hard works, especially on the rainy days, are deeply appreciated! Thank you also to all the families who follow traffic and parking regulations and exercise patience with the community on a daily basis. To clarify morning drop off, students are to begin arriving at school at 7:45 a.m. The school does not supervise students before 7:45 a.m. and students are not to be dropped off before that time. Parents are encouraged to drop off the students. Students are supervised in the auditorium and the playground.  Parents who wish to wait with their children are to obtain a visitor sticker by signing in on the visitor binder in the auditorium. The auditorium is closed at the Tardy Bell at 8:10 a.m. All students arriving after 8:10 a.m. are to sign the Tardy Book in the Main Office and enter through the Main Office. Only students are to enter the campus at that time and they are to go directly to their classrooms.  Also, please be mindful that teachers are not able to communicate adequately with you and simultaneously conduct classroom instruction and so we ask that you refrain from dropping in to the classroom at morning drop off or during the school day.  You are encouraged contact your child’s teacher through the method established by your child’s teacher. Teachers use a variety of applications such as Shutterfly, Class Dojo, and email to receive your communications. You can also leave a message with the office for the teacher to contact you or leave them a note which will be forwarded to the teacher.  I thank you for following these procedures in order to maintain a safe closed campus.

Happy New Year!

It's been great to see everyone back. The recent rains have kept the students in the classrooms for many rainy day recesses and lunches and they are enjoying playing in the classrooms.

Thank you to the parents who continue to volunteer their time at the Morning Valet Drop Off!

Dismissal is in the Auditorium on days when it is raining at dismissal time. There have been a few days when Grades 2-5 dismissed from the Auditorium when it wasn't raining--this was on days where it had rained just prior and the grounds were very wet--so thank you for your patience and flexibility.

There will be a Coffee with the Principal on February 1st. Planned topics of conversation include Mindset by Carol Dweck, Magnet School Applications, and Local District Northwest STEAM Fest on March 4th.

Hello EOW Learning Community,

I am starting a new weekly update here, on the school website, and my goal is to publish every Friday. Here are some updates to address some recent conversations.

Blackboard Connect - This is the vendor that LAUSD uses to notify families of various information from attendance, to district wide updates, to school specific messages. The robo-dialer program's phone calls show on the caller ID as "El Oro Way Elementary School" and until you listen to the message, you won't be able to tell whether it's an attendance notification, district wide message/request, or school specific request. At the end of the message, it provides an option to press a certain key to repeat the message. Also, it was suggested by a parent (thank you!) to post the script on this website and I will do so in the future.

Traffic Safety-At both morning drop off and after school pickup, traffic  is quite congested. I ask that all parents/guardians be more conscientious and gentle with one another. Every child's safety is all of our priority. Please follow all traffic and parking regulations, assume the best of one another and exercise patience. I thank you for your support.

Halloween/Holiday Letter - A letter was sent to the community last week. It outlined guidelines and policies from both the district and school so that all families can participate while promoting health and wellness. A copy is linked at the bottom of this news article.

Coffee with Principal - The PTA will be hosting a coffee and discussion time for parents on various topics. The first one will be on October 26th, 8:15 a.m. at the Rose Garden, and the topic will be Safety. Please join us!

Have a great weekend! Ms. Choi
