Bell Schedule, Policies and Procedures

El Oro Way Charter for Enriched Studies is a closed campus school.
Everyone entering the school MUST sign and out in at the office, either as a visitor or a volunteer. All gates will be locked before, during and after school. Parents are asked to drop off their kids outside of the Main office gate and have the child walk into the school campus under the supervision of school staff. At pick up, TK and Kindergarten parents will pick up their children at the Kinder Gate. 1st graders will be dismissed at the main office gate, and 2nd - 5th grades will be dismissed at the playground gate. If you have two children at the school, the older sibling will be sent to the younger sibling's pick-up location.

 

We ask that you do not use the Staff Parking lot at any time and follow all parking and traffic regulations at all times.

 

If you would like to volunteer at the school , even just once, it is required that you apply for the LAUSD School Volunteer Program (available online and at the office.) You will need to provide clearance for TB and complete LAUSD Lifescan. Once your application is processed, you will receive an official volunteers badge from LAUSD and can volunteering during the school day. Before School
Student supervision begins at 7:45 a.m.  Students report to the auditorium. At approximately 8:00 a.m., students are directed to the Playground to line up with their class. Teachers pick up students at 8:10 a.m. Students are to walk to their classroom line-up areas on the yard after they enter the school. Students are not to loiter in the hallways, play with personal sports equipment (i.e. balls, jump ropes, etc) or handheld electronics.  Students may not play tag.

El Oro Way Traffic Guidelines
El Oro Way has approximately 500 students being dropped off within 15 minutes. 
It is imperative that we follow the posted traffic signs.

  • Drop off students in the loading/unloading zone in front of the school. DO NOT drop off students or stop your car along the RED curb or in the crosswalk zone.
  • DO NOT park your car in the loading/unloading zone. Please be considerate and patient in the loading/unloading zone.
  • Time constraints allow approximately 5-10 seconds per car to unload.
  • For parents who would like to walk their student(s) to campus, please park on the street and not in the parking lot.
  • The parking lot is reserved for the El Oro Way staff. This is not a pick up or drop off zone for students.
  • Set an example for our students and children by using the designated crosswalks and NOT jaywalking.
  • There are no U-turns allowed on El Oro Way.
  • LAPD regularly monitors El Oro Way. Traffic citations have been issued.

Please be courteous to our parent volunteers. Their main concern is the safety of all of our children.

Attendance and Absences
Establishing good attendance and punctuality habits is an important element of the education process. Please monitor the time your child retires at night so that he/she will get ample rest.  Elementary school age children need 10 to 11 hours sleep nightly.  Children who ride the bus should be at the bus stop at least five (5) minutes before scheduled time for pick up. Many children miss too much class time because they do not catch the bus. When your child returns after an absence, verification from the parent/guardian is needed. A message may be left in the dedicated voicemail box, an email can be sent to Ms. Karamanukyan, txk3795@lausd.net, or a note explaining the reason sent to the child’s teacher. Please be sure to include your child's first and last name, your name and relation to the child, the dates(s) of absence and reason. Please try to arrange your child’s medical and dental appointments for the last hour of the school day or after school. Calls are automatically made by the robo-dialer to parents of children who are not present at time of attendance. If the student arrives late, the phone call will go out until the students' tardy arrival is updated in the attendance system. After 10 total days of absences, student will be referred to the District Attendance Offices. 

Homework Policy
Homework is a very important resource in helping students to learn.  It is given to provide the student with an opportunity to complete or expand a classroom assignment; to develop good work habits and a sense of responsibility; to provide opportunities for students to engage in research projects and/or self-directed activities. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. Students who do not complete homework and or class-work will be provided a special table during recess and lunch to complete his or her work.  Snack, lunch, and bathroom opportunities will be afforded to every student.                                                            

Kindergarten    15-20 minutes per day
Grades 1-2        30-35 minutes per day
Grades 3-4        35-45 minutes per day
Grade 5              50-60 minutes per day

Parents will receive a homework policy developed by each grade level.

Cell Phone Policy
Per Los Angeles Unified School District policy, Student may carry a cell phone in their backpack for emergency use only.  The cell phone must be turned off and remain in the student’s backpack during school hours.  Cell phones that are used during the school day will be taken away and turned in to the office.  The parent may pick up the cell phone from the office.

After-School Playground
For students in Grades 2-5, the playground will be open every school day until 6:00 p.m. The playground will be closed for school and legal holidays, unassigned days, and pupil-free days.  

Emergency Information Cards
Please complete the emergency card and return them to school immediately. It can also be completed online, printed, and sent in to the classroom. It is extremely important for us to be able to contact you in the event of illness or other emergencies. Please list only neighbors or relatives who have telephones with working numbers and who are authorized by you to care for your child if you are not available.

Breakfast is served in the classroom at 8:15 a.m. at no cost to all students. 

You may apply for free/reduced price meals. For the month of September, students who had free meal tickets last year will receive free meals with their identification card. In order to continue, however, a new application must be submitted and eligibility verified for your child. Applications can be found in our office, our parent center, or click here for more information.

Please help your child to remember to take her/his lunch, or lunch money to school; the office cannot loan money for meals and no provision for lunches can be made through the cafeteria. If parents plan to bring lunch later in the morning, please instruct your child to pick it up in the office at the beginning of his/her lunchtime. CHILDREN ARE NOT TO BRING SOFT DRINKS TO SCHOOL OR EAT CANDY DURING THE LUNCH/RECESS PERIOD.  Parents are encouraged to monitor all foods sent to school for high sugar/salt content. Due to many students having food allergies there is no sharing of food or beverage.  If your child has specific food allergy, please contact the school nurse to provide the school with documentation 

Gum and Candy on School Premises 
It is requested that children not bring candy, chewing gum, hot cheetos or any “hot” or “pepper” food items, hand-held electronic games or toys onto the school grounds. Any such items taken from students will not be returned to the student.  Parents may contact administrative staff to retrieve the item. Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.

Students with Disabilities and Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act 1973 (Section 504) is a federal civil right which prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive financial assistance from the U.S.A. Department of Education.  Section 504 requires that students with disabilities be provided a free, appropriate, public education.  A Section 504 Plan may be developed for students with disabilities who do not need or require special education services but who may need accommodations which can be provided through the general education program.  Parents or guardians will be notified in writing of any District decisions, and/or educational placement of students and their right to appeal these decisions under Section 504.  Further information and assistance concerning Section 504 may be obtained by contacting Mrs. Mary Seimears at (818) 360-2288.

Classroom Assignments
Special consideration has been given to each child for his/her class assignment. Teachers and administrators  have met and organized students into new classes for the coming year. The following major criteria have been utilized for class assignments: academic level, age, bilingual status, special education needs, social/emotional maturity, gifted/talented qualifications, previous retention and gender. Teachers and administrators devote many hours to the organization process in order to ensure that each student is placed in the appropriate class based upon his/her needs. We therefore encourage parents not to make special request for students to be placed in specific classrooms. We value each student and will give each child special consideration.

School-Wide Behavior Policy
El Oro Way Elementary School continues to encourage our students to follow the Six Pillars of Character each day.  The following is a list of El Oro Way’s school-wide Student Behavior Standards:

  1. We do not fight; no touching.
  2. Talking and finding solutions will always be our way of handling problems.
  3. We do not call each other names; no bullying.
  4. Follow school rules and play fair.
  5.  No playing tag and no use of sports equipment on the before school yard.
  6. If there is a problem, go to the adult supervising. Do not get angry.
  7. Keep control of your actions.
  8. Follow BEST Behavior and be:

Responsible, Respectful, Safe, and Helpful! Our progressive Discipline procedure is reviewed by the Discipline Foundation Committee each year and consists of a four tier system. Discipline interventions range from students resolving their own conflicts to teacher and/or administrator conferences.  In severe cases LAUSD Suspension Policy will be followed. We continue to implement the “Second Step” curriculum in each classroom to provide our students with conflict resolution skills and self-monitoring tools.

In our ongoing effort to maintain a safe school environment for all of our students, El Oro Way follows the LAUSD Anti-bullying Policy. We take bullying seriously and we do not tolerate it at El Oro Way. Please review the accompanying Anti-bullying letter with your child(ren).  

We continue to implement our positive BEST Behavior Program. Students receive BEST Behavior tickets when they follow BEST Behavior rules and demonstrate being Responsible, Respectful, Safe and Helpful at school.  Once a month a student ticket will selected from each classroom.  The student will be invited to participate in a special event at lunchtime.  

Students who do not complying with school rules may be assigned by a teacher or administrator to sit on the Detention Bench during play periods at recess and/or lunchtime. Students will always be given time to eat their snack or lunch and use the restroom prior to Detention Bench attendance.  

The “Parents as Partners” volunteer supervision program will continue this year. We wish to thank all of you who so graciously volunteered to assist us in increasing the number of adults for supervision.  With your continued participation, we will ensure the safety of our students and provide alternative activities for them. Student Dress Code
A School Uniform Policy has been established.  The policy is optional for all students.  The school uniform colors are navy blue and white or khaki and white.  Parents are to remind their children of appropriate school dress.  We have become aware of advertising and marketing of school attire that is inappropriate for school.  All students are required to show proper attention to personal cleanliness, health, neatness, safety and suitability of clothing and appearance for school activities.  Students should NOT wear to school:

  1. Hip-huggers, “hipsters,” or below the waist  jeans
  2. Halter tops, tank tops or tops with spaghetti straps.
  3. Tops that expose the midriff.
  4. Tops that have sexually explicit, suggestive or derogatory/inflammatory phrases, or references to alcohol, drugs, and/or smoking

We recommend that students wear shoes that are safe and appropriate for physical education activities on the playground.
