School News

Hello El Oro Way Charter for Enriched Studies Learning Community,

I am receiving many inquiries about ACCELERATION DAY – October 19, 2022.

This is NOT a regular school day.

Students are not required to come to school. The day is optional for students.

The plans for enrichment and instruction are currently in development for that day.

YMCA, at this time, will be providing their services to enrolled families at the Van Gogh site for that day. This is normally how childcare is provided on non-school days.

At this time, it is anticipated that teachers and aides will not be coming to work that day.

More information about this Acceleration Day on October 19, 2022 will be provided as it becomes available.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best, Ms. Choi

Thank you to all the parents and community who have responded so favorably to the safety reminders at school drop off and pick up. So many more families are using the crosswalk and arriving on the east side of El Oro Way! I also want to recognize my deep appreciation for the parent volunteers who have supported in awarding BEST Behavior Tickets to students for arriving safely. Students turn in their tickets and participate in a drawing for prizes on Friday to celebrate their BEST Behavior to be responsible, respectful and safe. In addition, PTA will be providing a cold treat at dismissal next week to recognize families who are participating in the safety efforts. All parents and community are reminded to:

BE KIND

USE PAINTED CROSSWALKS

Operate automobiles LEGALLY in accordance with all DMV regulations. These include:

  • No speeding
  • No stopping in the middle of the street to unload.
  • No U-turns in front of school on El Oro Way. Several signs are posted.
  • Do NOT block driveways.

A Traffic Safety Committee is still recruiting members as they work to bring back the Morning Safety Valet Program. Please sign up on this electronic sign up sheet to join this committee.  Volunteers are needed to open car doors to help students exit vehicles in the mornings.  A meeting has been scheduled for Sept. 16, 2022 following the School Volunteer Training. We will also work with the city to possibly move the crosswalks or place additional marked crosswalks. I remind all of you that the safety of the students is all of our responsibility.

Superintendent Carvalho has planned for 4 “Acceleration Days” into the school calendar. These 4 days are in addition to the 180 of instruction. These days are OPTIONAL for students, teachers, supervision staff, classroom aides. Students who do not attend school on these dates will not be marked absent since it is not a regular school day. LAUSD has also stated that all students can come to school on these days. Currently, I am waiting for details on staffing so that we can plan our school’s acceleration. The activities can include parent conferences, small group instruction, teachers and staff professional development. At this time, the teachers’ union is calling for members to boycott the first acceleration day due to the lack of information about teachers participation on these days. The dates are: October 19, 2022; December 7, 2022; March 15, 2023; April 19, 20223. I will provide more information as it becomes available.

Best,

Ms. Choi, Principal

Hello El Oro Way Charter for Enriched Studies Learning Community,

This morning, we held our first fire drill and all the students gathered on the playground as we accounted for all students. If you are on campus volunteering during an emergency drill such as this, be sure to evacuate to the playground and check in with Mrs. Schiffman, the Parent Community Rep.

Safety is always a topic for both discussion and practice. Today, I talked to students about crossing the street safely at drop off and pick up. For morning drop off and after school pick up, all families are asked to cross at the painted crosswalks only. Other safety topics will be addressed throughout the school year including driving and parking safely. Be sure to cross safely with students before and after school I thank you in advance for your cooperation.

It was nice to see many new families at the Annual PTA Friendship Breakfast on Friday! There is a Coffee with Principal planned for next week on Wednesday, September 7, 2022. We will gather outside the Parent Center for coffee, pastries, and to discuss upcoming school events.

Warmly, Ms. Choi
